About Global Water Partnership-Caribbean (GWP-C)
Global Water Partnership-Caribbean (GWP-C) is a working partnership among all stakeholders in water management within the Caribbean region and was formally launched in Tobago in June 2004. It is the Caribbean affiliate of the Global Water Partnership (GWP) organisation, a network of partners all working toward "A Water Secure World."
Our Mission GWP-C is dedicated to supporting Caribbean countries in the sustainable management of their water resources through the establishment of strategic alliances and the implementation of the appropriate actions. GWP-C is fully committed to promoting and applying the concept of an Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) approach at the community, national and regional level.
GWP-C continually strives to improve water governance in the Caribbean region and has partners in the following territories:
Anguilla, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, Montserrat, Puerto Rico, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago. See "GWP-C Partners" here.
Key Objectives of GWP-C
- To promote Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) as the approach to water resources management in the Caribbean region and to obtain national commitment towards IWRM implementation.
- To establish proactive alliances in water resource management that are representative, gender sensitive and participatory at the community, national, regional and international levels.
- To align the Caribbean region with hemispheric and other global water initiatives in order to capitalise on international experiences and opportunities for regional capacity building in IWRM.
- To improve water governance through the promotion, enhancement and effective implementation of legislation, policy, programmes and institutional, regulatory and administrative frameworks.
- To promote public participation in the management of water resources through capacity building and information sharing at the regional, national and particularly, the community level.
- To collaborate with other organisations and institutions working in other areas of sustainable development.
GWP-C Activities
- Annual High Level Session (HLS) with Ministers of water and managers of water utilities, a joint initiative of GWP-C and its partner the Caribbean Water and Wastewater Association (CWWA).
- Awareness building on Water Conservation and IWRM in the Caribbean.
- Youth Consultations with environmental youth councils.
- Capacity building and training in:
- Climate Change and the implication for water resources.
- Climate Change and Disaster Management.
- Water and Sanitation policies.
- Economic and Financial Instruments for Water Financing.
- Impacts and policy implications for water resources management.
- Water Use Efficiency in Agriculture Sector.
